Classroom Series

INTRO TO NAVIGATION

Whether you are a new paddler, already an assistant trip leader, or looking to refresh your knowledge, this class will lead you into traditional and modern navigational techniques.

Nautical charts contain a wealth of information that’s useful–and often critical–to paddlers.  Charts are particularly valuable for gaining local knowledge when visiting new waterways for the first time.

After learning the basics of how to read a chart, we’ll plan a trip using sample charts in areas across the U.S.  We’ll then learn how to use a compass to fix your location.  Lastly, we’ll look at some modern GPS devices, and discuss the pros and cons of using GPS on the water.

Due to changes at NOAA, free chart downloads are no longer available.  This class will include a section on electronic charting, and hacks on finding or creating your own free charts.

These classes will be held both in North Brooklyn and at Brooklyn Bridge Park – check the calendar for dates.
